Exploring the realities of trench warfare in reconstructed trenches.

Digging In is a series of World War I trenches, now installed at Glasgow’s Pollok Park.

The trenches for Digging In were researched and created for learning about the human experience of the First World War, with people being able to take in hands-on learning activities to see how soldiers managed in the tough conditions.

We worked with project leaders Northlight Heritage on creating an audio app as a companion to visiting the trenches, providing a soundscape of battle and life at the front, and including personal testimonial in audio interviews with veteran soldiers.

The project is also about the war's vast impact on people at home - the war effort in Britain and personal losses of families and communities.

Digging In is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Robertson Trust and the Armed Forces Covenant Fund. The project partnership includes Northlight Heritage, the University of Glasgow, Stewart's Melville College and Glasgow City Council. The app's audio soundscapes were provided courtesy of Glasgow School of Art Digital Design Studio (DDS).

The audio recordings of people within the app are from the Imperial War Museum's extensive collection of sound recordings, many of which are available to hear in full online.
